Neurofeedback

Try Neurofeedback at Dr. Trevor Hjertaas’ Windsor Office

Neurofeedback is a neuropsychologically informed intervention which utilizes sophisticated EEG and computer technology to allow individuals a window into the functioning of their own brain.

Neurofeedback is safe and non-invasive; nothing is being directly done to the person (so – unlike something like ECT – there is no dangerous electric current being applied to the brain). Rather, EEG sensors show a real-time picture of the person’s brain waves in action, and this information is utilized to begin strengthening the brain.

How Neurofeedback Treatment Works

In neurofeedback treatment, the brain itself receives auditory and visual signals when movement towards more optimal functioning occurs, thus facilitating healing.

Through the provision of neurofeedback, individuals can gain knowledge of brain processes which are not accessible to conscious awareness without the EEG technology. The person can gradually strengthen parts of the brain which are functioning less well and contributing to difficulties in everyday life. This process occurs largely automatically with the neurofeedback treatment.

What Can Neurofeedback Treat?

Neurofeedback is a relatively new advancement and so in some cases is still considered experimental (as research on its efficacy with certain conditions is still being accumulated). It has, however, been proven to be effective in decreasing the severity of epileptic seizures and also in helping to counter the negative symptoms of ADHD, so that the person can (usually for the first time ever) focus and concentrate on difficult tasks with little or no medication.

At present, a moderate amount of research has also been done showing that – in many cases – neurofeedback can be helpful in the treatment of such conditions as anxiety disorders (including more severe ones such as PTSD and OCD), more entrenched depression (which may not respond to other treatments alone), addictions, traumatic brain injury, and even higher functioning autism.

What Dr. Hjertaas Offers at Our Windsor Clinic

Dr. Hjertaas utilizes a sophisticated form of neurofeedback, where the first step involves the person’s whole-brain EEG readings being compared to a normative database (referred to as QEEG assessment). This allows for individualized treatment plans which have the best chance of success.

Neurofeedback, therefore, offers a safe, non-invasive, non-harmful means for individuals to use the power of their own brains to help counter the negative effects of many conditions where it was previously thought that little could be done.

Fees for Treatment

Similar to the regular psychotherapy session, there is a sliding scale available for neurofeedback treatment (depending on the type of neurofeedback required or chosen). Neurofeedback treatment is somewhat more expensive due to the specific equipment costs involved.

The full fee for a neurofeedback session utilizing individual sensors is $125 (ranging from this to as low as $75 depending on what the person can afford). This form of neurofeedback treatment is called “surface EEG” and is quite effective, but somewhat limited in its precision.

The full fee for a neurofeedback session requiring an electrocap (a whole head, 19-channel sensor system) is $145 (ranging from this to as low as $95 depending on what the person can afford). This form of neurofeedback treatment (called sLORETA) is a very recent development, allowing the EEG in the deeper regions of the brain to be treated (which greatly increases the types of conditions which can be helped).
